My current personal webpage: http://www.kjerstingruys.com
This is clearly an amateur web design, but it serves it's purpose. I'd like it to look more professional, less sterile, but still a tiny bit quirky. Also, I created this page before I started my blog, and my new personal webpage needs to represent an academic AND a blogger/author.
For personal webpage:
I LOVE this website. The homepage inspired me to want a separate homepage on my own website even though I can't really afford it... :P Much like the homepage of http://www.juliepowellbooks.com I would like to have a personal homepage that has a symbolic and representative image plus links to the following content pages: BIO, BLOG, RESEARCH, WRITING, RESOURCES, PRESS, and CONTACT. I also like the way this website mixes bright colors with neutrals. IN the content pages, it's also cool that each page has it's own symbol in the header.
Much less creative, but very professional and clean. Content-focused, minimalist. I also like the big, colorful widgets (though I might not like them as much if the rest of the website were busy and colorful, and I might not like the plain website as much without the big colorful widgets! it's all about balance, no?)
my current blog: www. ayearwithoutmirrrors.com
I don't know exactly what I want my blog to look like, but I can tell you what I don't like about my current page:
1) I think the colors are too intense and not lighthearted enough.
2) The background is supposed to be a broken mirror, but it kind of looks like scary broken glass.
3) The font(s) are so boring!
4) Nothing looks home-made, quirky, or vintagey... it's all computery, boxy, and sterile. There's no texture or richness, just color and sharp lines...
Here are some blog pages that I like, and what I like about them:
I like the cartooned header, and the use of color (mix of tonal greens in pastel and also brights). It's very readable, and your focus goes from the header to the text, without too many distractions from the background. I DON'T want a distracting background.
Even though this is a super feminine beauty-site, I like the simplicity, readability, and mixture of fonts used in header and post titles. I LOVE the handwriting font used for post titles. It looks like colored pencil to me. If only my handwriting were that legible... The 2-column design makes the content of this blog very easy to focus on. Again, plain background is nice.
With this blog, I like how the design colors manages to be feminine without being super-girly. I also (again) like the use of handwriting fonts, and combining of neutrals with brights. THat said, this blog is really busy in terms of content and columns, and I would want my blog to be more simple.
