Imagine you're designing the logo for an upcoming Olympics. We need that iconic feel that is a mix of type and imagery. This logo will be used on our website, signage, and on lots of merchandise like shirts. This is one of the most important youth sailing events in the US, and many international teams will attend, but there should be a sense of fun about the art as well.
You'll probably want to include some image, reference, or silhouette of the actual Opti boat. I'd recommend doing a Google image search for "Optimist sailboat." Also, if you show the boat in any form, you'll probably need to put the Opti symbol on the sail, and I've attached that graphic here.
Other notes: We'll end up needing several versions of the logo: With and without date (July 12-20, 2014), with and without location (Los Angeles, CA). We may also need to include our yacht club's flag in some versions of the art. I've attached a low-res version, which you can easily recreate.
Type: We will probably stick with "2014 Opti Nationals" or some variation thereof. But use that as a starting point.
Summary: We want a striking combination of type and imagery that represents not only the fun and excitement of youth sailing, but also the location of Marina del Rey, in Los Angeles. The logo should not be too generic! Make it feel culturally relevant an right for LA. The sailing venue is right next to Venice Beach. You could, for example, riff on '70 surf iconography or other fun ideas. Make it original, fun, and effective.
