Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) and adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN) are caused by a genetic defect that prevents the body from breaking down very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). As a result, the VLCFAs accumulate in the body and eventually destroy the myelin, the protective nerve coating that allows electrical impulses to be sent throughout the body (similar to the plastic coating on electrical wires). And when the body loses its ability to carry nerve signals, neurological symptoms occur, and ultimately death. Currently, there is no cure for ALD or AMN.
The movie “Lorenzo’s Oil” chronicles the story of Lorenzo, who had ALD, and his mother and father, who worked to develop a treatment for the disease. While the oil did help to prolong Lorenzo’s life, it still does not address the root problem, and it isn’t effective for everyone.
The goal of the ALD-AMN Global Alliance is to create more awareness, provide patient and family support, and to raise money to fund research for better treatments and, ultimately, a cure. ALD and AMN are extremely rare, and members of the Alliance hope that by pooling their resources, more progress can be made more quickly.
We are looking for a logo that highlights the global collaboration and reach of the Alliance, and would also like it to have design elements that convey some or all of the following: a nerve impulse, something to represent myelin (see the attached logo for The Myelin Project), and the DNA double helix. I’m not sure what colors are best for this sort of logo, so I will leave that for you all the play with.
I hope this is all clear. Please feel free to send me a message if you have any questions. Thank you very much!
